IonQ (IONQ): BofA Sees Upside as Quantum Roadmap Gains Commercial Traction

IonQ’s expanding quantum roadmap is drawing fresh Wall Street attention, with Bank of America initiating coverage as the company broadens its reach across computing, networking, sensing and semiconductor technology.

IonQ, Inc. (NYSE:IONQ) is entering a potentially important phase of its quantum-computing roadmap, with Bank of America initiating coverage on September 28 with a Buy rating and a $60 price target. BofA described IonQ as the largest public pure-play quantum company by revenue and highlighted its semiconductor-enabled approach to scaling qubit counts, broad customer engagement and exposure across quantum computing, communications and sensing.

The thesis comes as IonQ continues expanding beyond a pure quantum-computing business through acquisitions and partnerships spanning quantum networking, security, sensing, space and semiconductor manufacturing.

Another pure-play quantum company making the case for long-term commercial adoption is featured in Infleqtion (INFQ): A High-Conviction Pure Play in Quantum Computing.

Revenue Momentum Meets A Broader Platform

IonQ, Inc. reported $80.1 million of Q2 2026 revenue, up 287% year-over-year, making it the company’s strongest quarter on record and its fifth consecutive quarter of record results. Organic revenue grew 132%, while management raised full-year 2026 IonQ revenue guidance to $280 million to $290 million and maintained its expectation for approximately 100% organic growth.

The company also reported $485 million in remaining performance obligations, up from $122 million a year earlier. About 60% of quarterly revenue came from commercial customers, while 50% came from international customers. Multi-product sales increased 40% year-over-year and accounted for approximately 25% of revenue.

Superion And SkyWater Strengthen The Bull Case

For IonQ, the central technological argument is its transition toward semiconductor-enabled quantum systems. Following its $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater, IonQ said it received its first fully integrated quantum processing units from the foundry and plans to begin commissioning 256-qubit systems in 2027.

The company also announced Superion 256 deployments at Florida International University and NVIDIA’s Accelerated Quantum Research Center. The NVIDIA deployment will connect IonQ’s quantum processor with an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 system through NVIDIA NVQLink, supporting research into hybrid quantum-classical computing.

AI, Defense, And Sensing Expand The Opportunity

IonQ, Inc. is also broadening its potential markets beyond quantum computing. Its September research demonstrated a quantum generative model for detecting changes in high-resolution satellite radar data, while its broader platform includes quantum-safe security, networking and sensing.

Management said customer demand is increasingly spanning multiple products, with computing, security, networking, and sensing increasingly being discussed together. The company also said it is seeing greater engagement from both government and data-intensive industries.

Execution Remains The Key Risk

The opportunity comes with substantial execution requirements.

IonQ, Inc. is simultaneously integrating SkyWater, advancing its semiconductor roadmap and investing heavily in R&D. Q2 GAAP operating expenses reached $417.3 million, including $160.6 million of R&D, while adjusted EBITDA was negative $120.3 million.

The company also reported a $1.9 billion GAAP net loss, largely because of a roughly $1.6 billion non-cash mark-to-market impact from warrant valuations. Management has not yet provided combined IonQ-SkyWater revenue or EBITDA guidance, saying it needs time to complete the integration.

Hedge Funds Add Exposure As Short Interest Falls

Institutional positioning was somewhat more constructive in the second quarter. The number of hedge funds holding bullish positions in IonQ, Inc. increased from 39 to 42.

Short interest stood at 40.49 million shares as of September 15, down from 42.36 million a month earlier. Short interest represented 10.04% of the float, with a short ratio of 2.22 days.

The Real Test Is Commercial Scale

For IonQ, Inc., BofA’s $60 target reflects the potential investors see in semiconductor-based scaling and a broader quantum platform. The counterpoint is whether IonQ can convert its technical milestones, customer deployments, and acquisitions into sustainable commercial growth while managing heavy investment and integration costs.

The next test is therefore not simply whether IonQ can build more powerful quantum systems, but whether those systems can translate into repeatable deployments, broader customer adoption, and improving economics.
