HubSpot’s AI Adoption Is Rising. Can It Turn Usage Into Revenue Growth?

HubSpot, Inc. (NYSE:HUBS) received a boost last week (September 16) after UBS raised its price target on the stock to $290 from $250 while maintaining a Buy rating.

The price target raise followed HubSpot’s conference where the company outlined an AI strategy centered on the revamped Breeze Assistant, Aviator harness, and Growth Context Layer. Something to note from these products is that HubSpot is moving beyond standalone AI features toward a more integrated customer platform.

However, UBS also highlighted the key issue facing the stock. It noted that AI functionality and adoption are improving, but monetization remains in its early stages.

HubSpot Is Building AI Monetization Mechanism

Something interesting is emerging from HubSpot’s recent AI developments. The company is building a mechanism for monetization rather than simply adding AI features to its software. Breeze Assistant, for instance, is being expanded to orchestrate agents and execute tasks. Growth Context is designed to combine business, customer, and team information to improve AI-driven workflows.

HubSpot, Inc. has also been moving toward a hybrid seats-and-credits pricing model for Breeze. This model allows customers to pay for AI usage as they consume it, and it opens a pathway to convert higher AI adoption to incremental revenue.

Early customer data also points to greater engagement. For instance, customers using Marketing Studio created 81% more campaigns, and Breeze Assistant users generated 2.2 times more leads.

These insights are important. First, they show that customers are seeing measurable results from using HubSpot’s AI products. So the opportunity is not simply that AI could make HubSpot’s software better. It’s also that greater AI usage could increase customer value and support revenue growth. UBS’s price target upgrade reflects greater confidence in that trajectory.

AI Monetization Faces Growth and Pricing Test

HubSpot, Inc.’s Q2 revenue rose 20% as reported, but net revenue retention was 102%, down 1 percentage point year over year. AI-agent pricing reductions and trials as well as customer budget optimization were identified as factors weighing on seat and credit expansion.

Customers increased 14% and average subscription revenue per customer jumped 4%. But the company added only 7,000 net new customers in Q2, below management’s expectation of 9,000–10,000. That shortfall was blamed on weaker conversion rates and increased buyer hesitancy.

HubSpot may increase AI adoption while giving customers more favorable pricing. But that sets up a dilemma. The company is asking investors to believe that AI will become a major monetization engine. Yet some of the pricing changes designed to accelerate AI adoption are temporarily weighing on expansion economics.

If usage rises without enough incremental monetization, AI could improve engagement without providing the revenue acceleration that investors expect.

Hedge Funds Increase Exposure

The number of hedge funds holding HubSpot, Inc. at the end of Q2 was 51, up from 46 in the previous quarter. AQR Capital Management, the largest holder, continued to accumulate, increasing its position by 49% in the latest quarter.

The shorts, meanwhile, ceded ground. Short interest in the stock stands at roughly 6% of the float, down 2.6% from the previous reading.

For HubSpot, UBS’s target upgrade reflects improving confidence in the company’s AI progress. But the company still needs to prove that it can drive long-term adoption without sacrificing monetization.
