Strong First Day Program Momentum

Overall topline figures for the quarter came at the back of robust performance across the company’s BNC First Day programs. Revenue from these programs went up 9.0% compared to Q1 FY26, clocking in at $124.7 million. What is also notable is that the growth figure could have been higher if ongoing store closures did not have an offsetting effect.

On a year-over-year basis, Barnes & Noble Education made substantial progress in reducing its debt burden. Total debt stood at $123.5 million at the end of Q1 FY27, down $46.5 million from $170 million at the end of Q1 FY26.

Following the first quarter performance, management upheld its full-year outlook. It reiterated its target of between $85 million and $92 million in adjusted EBITDA.

A key growth driver for the company going forward is the expansion of its First Day Complete program, an institution-wide affordable access initiative. This program will be available at 263 campuses in Fall 2026, serving over 1.43 million students, representing roughly 26% growth compared to Fall 2025. Because of the academic calendar’s seasonal nature, the financial benefits of this expanded reach will mainly show up in the second quarter and beyond of fiscal 2027.

Losses Persist Despite Improvements

Revenue growth, as highlighted above, remained marginal, partly reflecting store closures and exits from certain less profitable locations. The company did deliver substantial improvements across its profitability metrics. However, there is still more work to be done in the coming quarters to achieve a complete turnaround from the current negative territory.

The company posted a net loss of $12.9 million for the reported period, despite a 29.3% improvement in comparison with $18.3 million for the corresponding period last year. Similarly, adjusted EBITDA loss improved 18.9% to $9.3 million from $11.5 million. The improvements reflect favorably on management’s cost-cutting and operational strategies.
