Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has lagged the broader market amid growing concerns about ballooning capital expenditure. The stock is up roughly 5% year to date, compared with a gain of about 21% for the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, which has bounced to record levels.
Investors have also been weighing Microsoft’s capital allocation strategy, particularly after its latest dividend increase. However, the sentiment surrounding the stock may be starting to improve. In a September 23 research note, Stifel reiterated its view that robust growth in artificial intelligence and other strategic initiatives could strengthen the company’s growth outlook. The firm upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold and raised its price target to $575 from $530.
Stifel believes Microsoft can sustain revenue growth in the mid-to-upper teens while maintaining relatively stable operating margins. The firm also expects improving operational efficiencies to support strong cash flow, potentially reducing Microsoft’s need to seek external financing to fund its investments.

Azure Remains a Key Growth Driver
Microsoft Corporation has reached an important inflection point, supported by continued strength in its Azure cloud-computing business. Stifel believes Azure’s recent acceleration can continue as additional data-center capacity becomes available. Operational efficiencies, additional data-center capacity and a growing revenue contribution from OpenAI could also support Azure’s growth.
The sentiment comes on the heels of CFO Amy Hood saying efficiency gains are being monetized quickly amid strong demand, while process improvements have shortened the lead time for bringing CPU and GPU capacity online. This makes Microsoft’s existing AI infrastructure more productive.
Microsoft is also expanding its AI monetization opportunities. Copilot seats reached roughly 30 million in the fiscal fourth quarter, while GitHub’s transition toward consumption-based pricing provides another potential source of recurring growth. These developments could help Microsoft capture more value from its expanding AI ecosystem.
Microsoft’s AI Investment Comes With Risks
Amid the bullish thesis and price target hike Microsoft Corporation still faces risks that could affect the stock’s momentum. For starters, it still faces high capital requirements to strengthen its AI and data center capacity, which could eat into margins.
Rapid advances in rival AI models could make it more difficult for Microsoft to maintain premium pricing for Azure AI services and Copilot. Although Copilot adoption has expanded rapidly, converting a large user base into durable incremental revenue and profits remains an important challenge.
Hedge Fund Positioning
Meanwhile, hedge fund positioning toward Microsoft Corporation weakened modestly between the first and second quarters, with the number of hedge funds holding the stock declining from 282 to 273.
However, several large investors continued to increase their exposure. According to Insider Monkey’s database, Arrowstreet Capital raised its Microsoft stake by 14% to approximately $10.31 billion, while Fisher Asset Management increased its position by 3% to roughly $9.92 billion.
Short interest also declined. Approximately 67.35 million Microsoft shares were sold short as of September 15, down from 68.54 million shares as of August 14. Short interest remained relatively limited at about 0.91% of shares outstanding, indicating that the stock is not heavily positioned for a decline.
The Verdict
Microsoft Corporation’s investment case is increasingly centered on whether strong Azure growth and faster AI monetization can offset the enormous cost of building the infrastructure needed to support the next phase of cloud and AI expansion.
At the same time, elevated capital expenditures, intensifying AI competition, and uncertainty around Copilot monetization remain important risks for investors to monitor. The balance between Microsoft’s massive AI investments and the revenue and cash flow they ultimately generate will likely remain a key factor in the stock’s performance.
