First Eagle Investment Management recently released its Q2 2020 Investor Letter, a copy of which you can download here. The First Eagle Global Fund A Shares posted a return of 14.73% for the second quarter (without sales charge), underperforming its benchmark, the MSCI World Index which returned 19.36% in the same quarter. In the said letter, First Eagle highlighted a few stocks and Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM) is one of them. Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM) is a multinational precious metals streaming company. Year-to-date, Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM) stock gained 92.3% and on August 4th it had a closing price of $56.13. Here is what First Eagle said:
“The strength in the price of gold was generally supportive of gold-related equities whose performance historically has been leveraged to the gold price. One such example is Wheaton Precious Metals, a Canadian streaming company that maintains, in our view, a high-quality, low-cost portfolio of precious metal purchase agreements that is well diversified across mining partners, geographies and metal types. Despite pandemic-related suspensions of six of its mining assets, Wheaton posted a 50% year-over-year increase in operating cash flow for the first quarter, which allowed the company to reduce its net debt while raising its quarterly dividend payment.”
In Q1 2020, the number of bullish hedge fund positions on Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM) stock decreased by about 17% from the previous quarter (see the chart here), so a number of other hedge fund managers don’t seem to agree with Wheaton Precious Metals growth potential. Our calculations showed that Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (NYSE:WPM) isn’t ranked among the 30 most popular stocks among hedge funds.
