ABI Research recently published some interesting data regarding the tablet market in North America: North America to Claim Nearly Half of $72 Billion Tablet Spend in 2013

This goes a long way in showing you just how big the tablet market has become in North America. What does this mean to Microsoft?

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)For one, it means there is still hope for the future. With the tablet market continuing to grow, it goes without saying that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) still has time to make up ground and become a player.

Jeff Orr, senior practice director, had this to say about the growth of the tablet market in North America:

“Three regions of the world are expected to yield 97% of tablet revenues in 2013. North America is forecasted to claim nearly half of the estimated $72 billion expected to be spent this year on tablet devices. Western Europe and Asia-Pacific will also have their hands in the honey pot for a combined 50% of world tablet revenues, respectively.”

Many would not expect Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) to have much to say about this, but if you believe the data from ABI Research the company is actually making a major impact on the North American tablet market.

Revenue growth is due in some part to greater availability of Windows-based tablets.

Despite the fact that only 1.5 million Surface tablets were shipping during the first quarter of 2013, Microsoft has impacted the market. Orr added the following:

“The average selling prices for Windows 8 and Windows RT are higher than other platforms, which is keeping price erosion minimized.”

Even though the sales and shipment numbers for Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Surface tablets are not robust, this has not stopped the company from impacting the market as a whole.

Windows based tablets will continue to grow in popularity as more and more partners jump in on the action, including Acer, Dell, Sony, and HP among others.
