Twitter Inc (TWTR) Ready To Fight Trolls And Abusive Tweets Using ‘Quality Filter’

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has many a times been accused of not doing enough to clamp on abuse and harassment on its platform, a move that has cost the microblogging site many users according to CEO, Dick Costolo. If recent developments are anything to go by, then the social network is moving swiftly to stop major trolls. The Verge reports that the network is working on what appears to be a ‘Quality filter’ that will curate timelines in a bid to hide unwanted messages and cyber trolls.

Quality Filter will be used to remove all tweets from the timeline that contain threats, abusive language and even duplicate content. The feature is already up and running in accounts of verified users waiting to see if it will be made available on the entire ecosystem. Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)’s new feature theoretically cleans up things on the flick of a switch.

The quality filter is not an entirely new tool but an extension of ‘tailored filtering’ that lets users select an edited version of their notifications timeline based on things like users they had the most interactions with. Verified iOS users will now be able to remove abusive remarks, and suspicious accounts from their notifications using the quality filter.

Making the filtering tool available first to verified-users makes a lot of sense as they are the ones with the most followers and at risk of being trolled online. Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) is also acknowledging that unverified users also have to cope with bullying having already launched a new anti-harassment tool. The new feature makes it easier for people to report abuse to law enforcement agencies complimented by a set of tools designed to make it faster to report different kinds of harassment.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has also been trying to cull serial trolls by tracking phone numbers even though the solution is not as effective as it ought to be, because one does not need a phone number to open a new account. The developments essentially show the social network is slowly trying to become reactive in dealing with bullying instead of being proactive as was the case in the past.
