Twitter Inc (TWTR) Plans to Build an Office in the Middle East

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), a social media giant, has announced its plans today about building an office in Dubai that would be the first location for the California based company in the Middle East region. A Wall Street Journal article reported on the news and discussed about company’s setting up a workplace in Dubai.

“Twitter is coming to Dubai,” said Shailesh Rao, Twitter Inc.’s Vice President of Asia Pacific, Latin America and Emerging Markets.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) is very much famous as a social media platform in the Middle East region as it had provided an opportunity to fan the flames of the Arab Spring few years back. People of Saudi Arabia have become crazy about it. According to the Arab Social Media Report, total number of active Twitter users in the Middle East region has risen up steadily to 5.8 million as per last count in the month of March in previous year. Whereas, according to Twitter Inc, the number of total monthly active users of Twitter in the whole world is about 288 million.

The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed, now has two times the number of followers as compared to David Cameron, Prime Minister of U.K. and French leader Francois Hollande combined. In year 2013 when Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) had appointed Cairo-based Connect Ads as a rep in the Middle East, it started selling ads in the region. The company will now build an office in Dubai to deal the whole Middle East as said by Mr. Rao in a tweet without providing further details.

Saudi Arabians are the most active users of the Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)’s services in the region with a total count of 2.4 million, which accounts for approximately 40% of the 17.1 million tweets each day in the Middle East. Even the region loves to use Twitter’s services but the late entry of the company into the Middle East is not without a valid reason, because ad spending in the region is not much and it lies far behind the rest of the world. According to Strategy& consultancy, Saudi Arabian per capita ad spending was $38 in previous year as compared to $520 of the United States but it is forecasted that the gap will be closed in future.
