Sony Corp (ADR) (SNE) Hacking Might Be the Work of Wall Street-Wise Hackers: FireEye

Security experts are warning that the recent wave of hack attacks that has seen Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) systems crippled may in a way not be the work of North Korea sympathizers. During an interview on CNBC, FireEye Manager, Laura Galante, reiterated that the attacks could also be work of Wall-Street-Wise hackers in pursuit of inside information on companies.

Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)

“The fact that we are talking about North Korea Iran and potentially Wall Street insiders here speaks to the breadth of different types of actors who are now involved in this. If you think back to 2013, it was China economic espionage intellectual property theft that was widely being discussed. […] So it’s really now a very diversified type of activity that we are seeing across the board, “said Mrs. Galante

Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) has resorted to giving its employees new computers so that they can carry on with their daily routine as the attack exposed their computers to a rare data-wiping virus. FireEye has already revealed that the hackers might not be Chinese, Russia or North Korean but Native English speakers in pursuit of inside information on companies at Wall Street.

FireEye has already termed the hackers, FIN4 based on the fact that they target publicly traded company as well as advisory firms, in pursuit of data that can be used to manipulate stock prices

“The group that we call FIN4 will take the email accounts sometimes as many as 5 of the different firms and players involved in a potential deal. Will take that information and are likely using it to get an edge. So just having that insight into the discussions that are ongoing around a deal does that you don’t need to go any deeper,” said Mrs. Galante.

It has not yet been established which group might behind Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) Pictures attack, but earlier indication had pointed to hackers working on behalf of the North Korean company. The company is also not sure the scope of information that might have been stolen as investigations continue.
