Salesforce Inc. (CRM)’s Potential Listen Labs Acquisition Could Boost Its Agentic AI Strategy

Salesforce Inc. (NYSE:CRM) continues to strengthen its enterprise artificial intelligence offering as it looks to make AI a larger part of its customer relationship management ecosystem. On September 9, reports emerged that the company is prepared to spend as much as $2 billion to acquire Listen Labs, an AI-powered customer research platform.

The potential deal would extend Salesforce’s aggressive M&A strategy as the company seeks to expand its generative and agentic AI capabilities. Salesforce recently completed its approximately $3.6 billion acquisition of customer service AI agent provider Fin, formerly Intercom, underscoring management’s willingness to use acquisitions to accelerate its AI roadmap.

Listen Labs could add a new layer of customer intelligence to Salesforce’s platform. The company uses artificial intelligence to conduct customer interviews through audio and video and analyze the resulting responses.

Strengthening Agentforce With Customer Intelligence

The potential acquisition could be particularly valuable for Salesforce Agentforce, the company’s platform for building and deploying AI agents. Listen Labs could end up providing crucial insights into why customers behave the way they do. Customer interviews and conversations can reveal motivations, preferences, frustrations, and other qualitative information that may not be captured in traditional CRM databases.

Integrating these insights into existing customer data could give Agentforce a richer context for making recommendations and taking actions on behalf of customers.

The deal could also strengthen Salesforce Inc.’s broader Data Cloud strategy. Customer research generated through Listen Labs could potentially be incorporated into customer profiles and made available across sales, marketing, service, and other applications. That could increase the value of Salesforce’s data ecosystem while creating opportunities to monetize AI-powered customer research as an additional service.

More broadly, the acquisition fits Salesforce’s strategy of turning its platform into an AI-driven system that does more than store customer information. By combining structured CRM data with unstructured information from customer conversations and interviews, Salesforce could give its AI agents a more comprehensive view of the customer.

Acquisition Valuation Is a Key Risk

The biggest concern surrounding the potential Listen Labs deal is valuation. Paying as much as $2 billion for a relatively small AI company would leave limited room for execution mistakes. Therefore, the acquisition would need to generate meaningful strategic and financial benefits to justify the price.

Integration challenges could delay those benefits, while privacy concerns surrounding the collection and analysis of customer conversations could create additional regulatory and reputational risks.

Salesforce Inc. also faces intense competition in AI-powered customer research and enterprise software. If competing platforms offer similar capabilities at lower costs, the expected benefits from Listen Labs could prove smaller than management anticipates.

Another concern is Salesforce’s growing reliance on acquisitions to expand its AI capabilities. Investors could eventually question whether the company’s existing products, including Agentforce, can generate sufficient organic demand without continuous M&A.

That risk is particularly important because Salesforce is increasingly competing on the strength of its AI platform. If acquisitions become the primary method of filling product gaps, investors may place greater scrutiny on capital allocation and the company’s ability to generate attractive returns from its AI investments.

Hedge Fund Positioning

Despite Salesforce Inc.’s aggressive AI investment and M&A strategy, institutional support for the stock remains strong. According to the Insider Monkey database, 99 hedge funds held stakes in Salesforce at the end of the second quarter, compared with 101 funds in the previous quarter.

Harris Associates increased its Salesforce position by 9% to approximately $2.5 billion, while Arrowstreet Capital increased its stake by 5% to approximately $2.1 billion.

Short interest also suggests that outright bearish positioning remains relatively limited. Approximately 3.22% of Salesforce’s shares were sold short as of August 14, representing roughly 26.5 million shares.

The Verdict

The potential Listen Labs acquisition would reinforce Salesforce Inc.’s ambition to build an AI-powered customer platform rather than simply add AI features to its existing software. Combining Listen Labs’ qualitative customer insights with Salesforce’s CRM and Data Cloud infrastructure could give Agentforce access to richer context and potentially improve the usefulness of its AI agents.

However, the potential $2 billion price tag raises the bar for execution. Salesforce will need to demonstrate that Listen Labs can be integrated effectively, generate meaningful customer value, and contribute to the company’s broader AI monetization strategy.
