Research In Motion Ltd (BBRY) BlackBerry Calling on Users to Spread the Word

At this point, it is pretty clear that Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry is trailing in the smartphone market. While the company was once at the top of the market, things have not gone as planned over the past few years.

The good thing is this: BlackBerry is going all out this time around to reclaim market share and show the world that its devices and operating system can stack up with those from the competition, including the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) operating systems.

Along with a fresh operating system and two new smartphones, Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is also rolling out a variety of new features with the hopes of attracting a larger audience of users.

One such feature is based around BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and the fact that it has been made available for use on iOS and Android.

This was big news from BlackBerry, as the company is looking to stay fresh in the mind of those who are using smartphones from competitors. While this may not do much in terms of smartphone sales, it could help increase the number of BBM users.

In a recent post on the official Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry blog, the company is reaching out to its users in hopes they will help spread the word about the availability of BBM on iOS and Android.

“Now we’ve made it easy for you to share the news with your friends who might not have heard. Check out these avatars that you can save, download and set as your BBM or social network avatar to help spread the word. Simply follow the instructions below to add these images as your BBM display picture.”

Even though you may be up to date with everything Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is doing, there are others who are not. BlackBerry is hoping that its dedicated user based will help spread the word about this new feature, making it easier to pick up a larger number of users.

To change your BBM Display Picture:

1. Right-click on the avatar of your choice and select “Save picture as” to save it to your computer.
2. Email the file to the email address associated with your BlackBerry smartphone.
3. Open the image on your BlackBerry smartphone.
4. Press the menu button to “Download Attachment”.
5. In BBM, set the new file as your profile picture.
