While the chipmaker unveiled its new system-on-a-chip server line, the announcement was just a small part of a wider statement of intent by Intel that its x86 architecture can and should be used everywhere in the data centre, commoditising equipment like storage arrays and network switches by building them around low-cost Intel chips such as the Atom.
