There has been a lot of talk lately about what the next generation Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone will bring to the table. Along with this, a large number of people, including investors and consumers, are wondering if Cupertino is going to announce a cheaper smartphone in the months to come.

Apple Inc. (AAPL)At this point, the only thing we know for certain is that Apple is not talking about this. No matter how many rumors are floating around about the company announcing a cheaper iPhone this year, it has yet to speak. Of course, this is nothing new as Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) very rarely discusses upcoming product launches.

One thing we should be keeping an eye on is a story out of China. Digitimes is reporting that Foxconn has began recruiting workers for its Zhengzhou factory. While this may not sound like a big deal, there is reason to believe that this is tied to what Apple is doing with its new iPhone.

Here is more from the article:

“Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) is reportedly recruiting workers for its factory in Zhengzhou, northern China, specifically for production of a new iPhone model. In response, Foxconn confirmed the recruitment but stressed this is purely to meet seasonal labor demand.”

It would make sense that Foxconn would need to hire more people if it is going to take on orders for a new Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone. It is safe to assume that this information is true and that the factory is hiring solely because of a new order from Cupertino? Not exactly. Unless it comes out of Cupertino’s mouth, it is best to be cautious with the information.

The article goes on to add more about the factory’s current numbers:

“Currently, Foxconn has about 210,000 employees at its plants in Zhengzhou, but it is still a lot less than the number during the production peak in 2012 which stood at 300,000.”

There is a lot of confusion out there right now. While many believe this has something to do with a cheaper Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, there is no way of knowing for sure right now.

Chalk this up to another rumor that may or may not be related to a new smartphone from Apple. Only time will tell if this is the reason for the hiring.
