Microsoft Surface Keyboard: Microsoft Wins Surface Keyboard Patents

Microsoft Surface Keyboard: Despite the fact that many consumers are not getting excited about Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s lineup of Surface tablets, the company received some good news recently as it was awarded three patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT)Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is one of the hedge fund industry’s most popular stock picks, and it’s always important to pay attention to the smart money (see just why here).

CNET has been covering this story regarding “a trio of patents today for the touch/type cover keyboard.”

With the keyboard being one of the main selling points of the Surface lineup, the company has to be happy with this news. After all, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) put a lot of time and money into developing a keyboard cover that was durable enough to protect the screen of the device without losing its functionality. Most agree that this feature of the tablet is one of its best.

The article went on to add the following:

“The USPTO granted a trio of patents today for the touch/type cover keyboard design on Redmond’s tablet, including its “ornamental design for an electronic tablet with input device coupling,” as Microsoft described the construct in its patent application abstracts. Apparently thinking it was onto something big, Microsoft applied for patents covering its tablet’s keyboard design last May, roughly a month before the mystery event that turned out to be the device’s unveiling.”

Unfortunately, the keyboard technology alone has not been enough to win over consumers. Since being launched late last year, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has only sold roughly 1.5 million tables. This includes 400,000 Surface Pro devices.

While tablet sales continue to rise, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is having a difficult time carving out a niche. The same CNET article added:

“Despite booming sales in the overall tablet market, one analyst recently slashed his sales estimates for the Surface. Pacific Crest analyst Brendan Barnicle estimates Microsoft will sell 600,000 Surface tablets during the current quarter, down from an earlier projection of 1.4 million units.”
