Microsoft Surface Tablet Fail: Microsoft’s Surface Tablet Disappointing Thus Far

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT)Microsoft Surface Tablet Fail: In an article yesterday, we wrote about Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) attempting to put the clamps on tablet rivals, including the Surface from Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT). At this point, it is clear that the iPad family of devices is leading the pack.

So, where does the Surface tablet stand? According to a recent report by Chitika, Microsoft’s Surface is only generating 0.13% of all tablet web traffic. This is in contrast to the iPad and its industry leading 88%.

While the Surface has a lot of ground to make up if it is ever to compete directly with Apple’s iPad, there are plenty of other competitors within striking distance.

First up is Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Nexus line of tablets. Although the Google devices have been on the market for a longer period of time, early indications show that the Surface could eventually overtake the Android tablets.

According to Chitika, the Nexus lineup is generating approximately 0.91% of tablet web traffic. While it’s true that the Google tablets are generating seven times more traffic than the Surface, there are many factors to consider:

1) As noted above, the Nexus tablets have been on the market longer.

2) Microsoft has yet to release the Pro version of the tablet – it is due to hit the market in January 2013.

It is difficult to say if or when the Surface tablet will catch up to its Google competitor. That being said, additional retail availability in the early months of 2013 will help the cause.

In the near future (expected in January), the tablet from Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will be available in both Staples and Best Buy stores throughout the country.

While the debate of whether the Surface tablet can eventually catch-up to the Google Nexus lineup is sure to continue, it is important to look at the bigger picture: both companies have a lot of work to do if they ever plan on taking significant market share away from Apple. Let us know your thoughts on the tablet battle in the comments section below.
