Mattress Firm Holding Corp (MFRM): 40 North Management Buys More Shares

David S. Winter and David J. Millstone, the managers of 40 North Management, have decided to boost their investment in Mattress Firm Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:MFRM), having acquired 400,436 shares of the company over the past 60 days. According to a recently amended filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the fund now holds a little over 4.06 million Mattress Firm shares, the equivalent of 10.9% of the company’s outstanding stock.

Mattress Firm Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:MFRM) shares are trading close to all-time lows, having dropped by roughly 30% so far this year. The stock took a beating on June 10 after the company’s fiscal first quarter results failed to meet Wall Street’s expectations. Higher rebranding costs have had a negative impact on the company’s profitability and forced a revision of its forward guidance. Analyst downgrades followed that earnings report, as well as law firms looking into potential financial misrepresentations. Mattress Firm operates in a highly fragmented industry, with great potential for consolidation and that’s exactly what the company has been doing and will continue to do in order to get a solid footing and establish itself as a key player.

Heslam’s Stockbridge Partners boosted its stake by 6% during the first quarter to amass 2.78 million shares. Alan Fournier, on the other hand, chose to reduce his fund’s exposure to the stock, with Pennant Capital Management cutting its stake by 38% to hold 1.69 million shares of Mattress Firm on March 31.
