Jim Cramer on SoFi (SOFI): “I’ve Been a Longtime Believer in This One”

During the September 3 episode of Mad Money, host Jim Cramer addressed the recent volatility in SoFi Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFI), examining why the stock experienced an unexpected pullback despite delivering an exceptional earnings report. He commented:

What do we make of the action in SoFi Technologies, digital bank of choice for the younger generation? I’ve been a longtime believer in this one. And by the way, last year, my faith was rewarded as the stock ran from $8 to an all-time high of 32 bucks and change in November. Unfortunately, SoFi spent the last 6 months bouncing between 15 and 20. Even though the company reported a really solid top and bottom-line beat in late July, the stock actually sold off 9% in response. I didn’t understand that. Since then, though, it’s been rallying hard to the point where it’s now up more than 10% since that quarter.

Financial Performance and Growth Catalysts

Cramer’s ongoing confidence is anchored by the company’s accelerating financial metrics and robust operating scale. In its second-quarter report, SoFi posted record adjusted net revenue of $1.2 billion, representing a 40% increase compared to the same period a year prior. Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $0.12, comfortably topping consensus Wall Street estimates. Management capitalized on this momentum by raising its full-year adjusted net revenue guidance to a range of $4.75 billion to $4.85 billion. Underlying business expansion remained exceptionally strong, with total membership surging 35% year-over-year to 15.8 million members, while total loan originations hit an all-time high of $14.8 billion across personal, student, and home lending.

Valuation and Credit Risks

Even with multiples compressing from prior peaks, shares still trade at elevated forward earnings multiples (23.15x) compared to traditional banking peers, leaving little margin for error if loan defaults tick higher or if consumer credit quality deteriorates. Additionally, interest rate volatility can impact loan portfolio valuations, while heavy marketing investments and tech platform expenditures can constrain near-term operating leverage.

Analysis

According to Insider Monkey’s database tracking elite institutional holdings, 44 hedge funds held a stake in SoFi during the second quarter, compared to 47 in the prior quarter. Despite decreasing its stake by 66%, D E Shaw remained the most prominent shareholder of the company among those hedge funds. The firm owned 14.69 million shares in Q2. Short interest sits at 13.54% of the public float, showing a pocket of bearish conviction even as the business expands.

SoFi continues to expand its digital banking ecosystem and deliver record revenue growth. While short-term traders wrestle with valuation swings, Cramer sees the fundamental business trajectory as proof that the digital banking leader remains on solid footing.
