Jim Cramer Highlights Affirm (AFRM) and Its Strong Merchant Network

During the September 8 episode of Mad Money, examining consumer demand and macroeconomic pressures surrounding Affirm Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:AFRM), Jim Cramer commented:

How about the buy now, pay later business that’s Affirm? Max Levchin’s company has 28 million active customers. Affirm has a, it’s got a who’s who of partners including the biggest Amazon, Costco, as well as Shopify, Target, and Apple, which launches a pricey new phone tomorrow. We just saw their quarter; it was excellent. People are selling Affirm because they fear a rate hike from the Fed. I get that. But people will be paying substantially more for the stock without that worry. What matters is that the quarter had so much momentum that I think you’ll see great numbers right through the end of the year, holiday season.

Jim Cramer Highlights Affirm (AFRM) and Its Dominant Merchant Network

Business Fundamentals and Growth Drivers

Cramer’s focus on Affirm Holdings, Inc. highlights its strong position in the digital installment lending space, supported by a growing base of 27.8 million active customers. The company’s competitive moat is strengthened by major merchant relationships across major retail giants, including Amazon, Shopify, Costco, and Target. High-profile consumer hardware rollouts, such as new smartphone releases from Apple, serve as natural transaction volume catalysts that drive platform usage.

Recent financial results show the operational momentum with hard figures. Fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 revenue jumped 33% year-over-year to $1.17 billion, while gross merchandise volume surged 36% to $14.1 billion, concluding a strong fiscal year with total revenue reaching $4.26 billion.

Macro Pressures and Credit Vulnerabilities

Despite healthy operational metrics, the bear case centers on external macroeconomic pressures, especially sensitivity to Federal Reserve interest rate policy and borrowing costs. Higher interest rates can raise funding costs, reduce interest margins on variable-rate funding arrangements and pressure loan-sale economics.

Furthermore, the buy now, pay later model carries inherent credit default and consumer delinquency risks if macroeconomic conditions soften household balance sheets. Any deterioration in consumer credit quality or tightening of lending conditions could quickly pressure margins and challenge current valuation multiples.

Smart Money Positioning and Short Interest

Affirm Holdings, Inc. provides direct exposure to consumer installment spending, supported by a broad retail partner network. While macro rate fears will likely drive near-term volatility, the company’s underlying transaction momentum points toward a strong runway heading into the peak holiday season.
