The 800+ hedge funds and famous money managers tracked by Insider Monkey have already compiled and submitted their 13F filings for the fourth quarter, which unveil their equity positions as of December 31st. Our extensive review of these public filings is finally over, so this article is set to reveal the smart money sentiment towards Paycom Software Inc (NYSE:PAYC).

So, why do we pay attention to hedge fund sentiment before making any investment decisions? Our research has shown that hedge funds’ small-cap stock picks managed to beat the market by double digits annually between 1999 and 2016, but the margin of outperformance has been declining in recent years. Nevertheless, we were still able to identify in advance a select group of hedge fund holdings that outperformed the S&P 500 ETFs by more than 124 percentage points since March 2017 (see the details here).

With hedge funds’ sentiment swirling, there exists an “upper tier” of notable hedge fund managers who were boosting their stakes meaningfully (or already accumulated large positions).

Judging by the fact that Paycom Software Inc (NYSE:PAYC) has faced declining sentiment from the entirety of the hedge funds we track, logic holds that there is a sect of funds that decided to sell off their positions entirely by the end of the fourth quarter. At the top of the heap, Jack Woodruff’s Candlestick Capital Management said goodbye to the largest position of the “upper crust” of funds followed by Insider Monkey, comprising an estimated $40.5 million in stock, and Dmitry Balyasny’s Balyasny Asset Management was right behind this move, as the fund sold off about $21 million worth. These moves are important to note, as total hedge fund interest dropped by 3 funds by the end of the fourth quarter.

Stocks with higher number of hedge fund positions relative to other stocks as well as relative to their historical range receive a higher sentiment score. This is a slightly negative signal and we’d rather spend our time researching stocks that hedge funds are piling on. Our calculations showed that top 30 most popular stocks among hedge funds returned 81.2% in 2019 and 2020, and outperformed the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) by 26 percentage points. These stocks gained 7.9% in 2021 through April 1st and surpassed the market again by 0.4 percentage points. Unfortunately PAYC wasn’t nearly as popular as these 30 stocks (hedge fund sentiment was quite bearish); PAYC investors were disappointed as the stock returned -16.7% since the end of December (through 4/1) and underperformed the market.
