Last week Herbalife added two influential backers that could prove to be important allies. Antonio Villaraigosa, the former mayor of Los Angeles, has hopped on board to serve as a senior advisor to Michael Johnson, the chief executive of Herbalife, and the company’s board of directors.

The former Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa has been hired to be an adviser to the controversial Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF), the company announced through a press release. The announcement received swift and harsh criticism from the Latino community. The Mexican-American former mayor will advise the California-based entity on ‘strategic business development and global community outreach.’ Villaraigosa, 60, is joining the firm during an especially critical time as the company fights accusations of being a pyramid scheme that takes advantages of many, especially Latinos.

After leaving office in June, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has found a new gig as consultant for Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF). The company said in a press release that Villaraigosa, who served as eight years as mayor, will “provide counsel on strategic business development and global community outreach” and “serve as a senior advisor to Herbalife Chief Executive Michael O. Johnson and the company’s board of directors.”
