Google Automobile: Google Teaming Up With Kia

Google Automobile: It appears that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has the itch to expand into the automobile industry.

Google Inc (GOOG)In a recent press release, Kia Motors America (KMA) announced that it will begin working with the search giant to “provide content and search-based solutions enabled by Application Program Interfaces (APIs) for the second-generation of the automaker’s innovative UVO eServices telematics system.”

Although consumers will not be able to take advantage until Kia’s new 2014 Sorento CUV models hits the market, it is safe to say that many are excited about what the future holds.

The press release added:

The immediate integration of Google solutions will utilize Google Maps and Google Places to acquire driving directions and locate Points of Interest (POIs) in a seamless and organic manner. KMA and Google look forward to continuing to work together to bring innovative navigation solutions to enhance the connected car experience.

In other words, Kia is hoping to bring the power of Google Maps and Places to their customers.

While this new feature can be controlled from inside the car, it will also give owners the ability to use the Send2Car feature to send a destination to their vehicle directly from their Smartphone UVO app.

Henry Bzeih, head of the connected car program and chief technology strategist for Kia, added the following:

The newest iteration of the UVO platform is a breakthrough as one of the industry’s first mobile pure app-based telematics systems, and now with the Google solutions and APIs, we take the platform to yet another level of enhancement for the Kia customer. Due to the popularity and ease-of-use of Google Maps, owners can remain confident in the technology and information being delivered to them.”

Shortly after the UVO eServices are introduced to the public in the Sorento, Kia has plans to offer it in many other models including its popular Forte sedan.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) continues to look for new ways to expand its business, relying heavily on its “Maps and Places” popularity.
