General Motors (GM) Lifts 2026 Outlook: Is GM Stock Still a Buy?

General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) raised its full-year profit outlook even as it continues to navigate a challenging global operating environment characterized by tariffs, rising energy costs and inflationary pressures. The company hiked its profit outlook by $500 million to between $14 and $16 billion. The hike signals confidence that consumer demand will remain strong despite the elevated interest rates and macroeconomic uncertainty.

Betting on Consumer Confidence

Despite higher vehicle financing costs and persistent inflation, consumers continue purchasing new vehicles. General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) is benefiting amid strong demand in profitable segments such as full-size pickups and SUVs. Models such as the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade continue to generate strong profitability. Resilient demand suggests that affordability pressures have not yet caused the sharp deterioration in earnings that investors feared.

Wall Street remains constructive on GM. JPMorgan raised its price target to $120 while reiterating an Overweight rating, citing continued strength in the company’s truck and SUV franchise. Bank of America also maintains a Buy rating with a $107 target, arguing that premium vehicle demand and healthy margins continue to offset challenges associated with the EV transition.

The Investment Case and Key Risks

General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) continues to generate robust earnings from its high-margin full-size pickups, SUVs, and commercial vehicles. Rather than chasing volume, GM has shifted toward its most profitable vehicles. The strategy has helped protect margins even as overall industry demand softens.

General Motors is attractively valued relative to both the broader market and many global automakers. It trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 6.2x, below the S&P 500 average of 20x. A price-to-sales multiple of 0.38x suggests investors pay just 38 cents for every dollar of revenue.

Even as the company trades at a discount, it continues to repurchase shares aggressively, reducing shares outstanding and boosting earnings per share.

Instead of aggressively expanding EV production into weak demand, GM is resizing its EV investments to match market conditions. This disciplined approach could preserve profitability while allowing the company to benefit if EV adoption accelerates later.

Over time, software, connected services, and autonomous technologies could provide higher-margin recurring revenue streams that reduce GM’s dependence on cyclical vehicle sales.

At the same time, a recession or prolonged period of weak economic growth could erode consumer confidence and reduce vehicle demand, particularly as elevated interest rates continue to increase financing costs.

GM has also incurred billions of dollars in restructuring charges as it adjusts EV production plans. If EV demand remains weaker than expected or competition intensifies, returns on these investments could disappoint.

Labor negotiations represent a moderate-to-high structural risk for General Motors. Higher wages and the possibility of production disruptions can pressure margins and earnings, particularly if the auto market weakens.

Bottom Line

GM’s decision to raise its full-year adjusted profit outlook indicates that U.S. vehicle demand has remained more resilient than expected. Strong sales of high-margin trucks and SUVs, improved operational efficiency, and disciplined cost management continue supporting profitability. While macroeconomic and EV transition risks remain, the updated guidance reinforces confidence that GM is navigating a challenging automotive environment better than many investors had anticipated.

General Motors’ short interest remains relatively low at 26.95 million shares sold, or about 3% of the public float. The short interest indicates that most investors are not aggressively betting against the company.

Hedge fund interest in General Motors as a long-term investment play remains broad, despite softening modestly. According to Insider Monkey’s database, 77 hedge funds held stakes in the company as of the first quarter, down from 81 as of the fourth quarter of last year. AQR Capital Management hiked its stake by 28% to over $1 billion as Viking Global increased by 35% to $683.6 million. Meanwhile, Harris Associates trimmed its stake by 23% to about $1 billion.

Overall, it seems that investors remain cautiously constructive on General Motors. While the stock appears attractively valued and operationally resilient, concerns related to tariffs, EV restructuring, and macro-economic risks remain.

When Jeff Bezos said that one breakthrough technology would shape Amazon’s destiny, even Wall Street’s biggest analysts were caught off guard.

Fast forward a year and Amazon’s new CEO Andy Jassy described generative AI as a “once-in-a-lifetime” technology that is already being used across Amazon to reinvent customer experiences.

At the 8th Future Investment Initiative conference, Elon Musk predicted that by 2040 there would be at least 10 billion humanoid robots, with each priced between $20,000 and $25,000.

Do the math. According to Musk, this technology could be worth $250 trillion by 2040.

Put another way, that’s roughly equal to:

  • 175 Teslas
  • 107 Amazons
  • 140 Metas
  • 84 Googles
  • 65 Microsofts
  • And 55 Nvidias

And here’s the wild part — this $250 trillion wave isn’t tied to one company, but to an entire ecosystem of AI innovators set to reshape the global economy.

It’s a leap so massive, it could reshape how businesses, governments, and consumers operate worldwide.

Even if that $250 trillion figure sounds ambitious, major firms like PwC and McKinsey still see AI unlocking multi-trillion-dollar potential.

How could anything be worth that much?

The answer lies in a breakthrough so powerful it’s redefining how humanity works, learns, and creates.

And this breakthrough has already set off a frenzy among hedge funds and Wall Street’s top investors.

What most investors don’t realize is that one under-owned company holds the key to this $250 trillion revolution.

In fact, Verge argues this company’s supercheap AI technology should concern rivals.

Before I reveal the details, let’s talk about how some of the richest people on the planet are positioning themselves.

  • Bill Gates sees artificial intelligence as the “biggest technological advance in my lifetime,” more transformative than the internet or personal computer, capable of improving healthcare, education, and addressing climate change.
  • Larry Ellison — through Oracle, is spending billions on Nvidia chips and partnering with Cohere to embed generative AI across Oracle’s cloud and apps.
  • Warren Buffett — not known for tech hype — says this breakthrough could have a ‘hugely beneficial social impact.

When billionaires from Silicon Valley to Wall Street line up behind the same idea — you know it’s worth paying attention to.

Even as we admire what Tesla, Nvidia, Alphabet, and Microsoft have built, we believe an even greater opportunity lies elsewhere…

But the real story isn’t Nvidia — it’s a much smaller company quietly improving the critical technology that makes this entire revolution possible.

And judging by what I’m hearing from both Silicon Valley insiders and Wall Street veterans…

This prediction might not be bold at all:

My name is Inan Dogan. I’m the co-founder and Research Director of Insider Monkey. I have an important message for you today.

Since March 2017, my stock picks have returned 16.5% annually. Today, I’ve found an opportunity even bigger than my British American Tobacco call.

Two years ago, Wall Street wrote off British American Tobacco (BTI) as a “melting ice cube.” The stock had crashed 40% from its peak, and consensus said the business was dying.

We looked under the cover and realized they were wrong.

We alerted our subscribers, and BTI returned 90% in just 16 months.

Now if you had invested just $10,000 in BTI in June 2024, you’d be sitting on $19,000 in October 2025.

Today, we have identified a nearly identical pattern in a digital-first giant trading at $3.

While the market panics over a surface-level revenue decline, our PhD-led research shows management has actually surgically cut $100 million in waste to focus on high-margin growth.

This pattern is a hallmark of our 16.5% annual return track record. The current opportunity offers a 400% upside potential—dwarfing even our 90% BTI return.
