Chevron vs. Exxon: A Closer Look at Two Reliable Dividend Stocks

Some of the market’s best dividend stocks come from an industry that can be surprisingly dependable for income investors: energy. Oil and natural gas prices can swing sharply from one year to the next, yet energy stocks have never been forced to cut their dividend payments.

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (NYSE:XOM) and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) both announced their quarterly dividends on July 31. The two companies are popular among income investors and are part of the Dividend Aristocrats group, which includes companies that have raised their dividends for more than 25 consecutive years.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX)

Chevron has several things working in its favor when it comes to the dividend. The company generates strong cash flow, is growing production, and has a long history of raising its payout. It now pays $1.78 per share each quarter, or $7.12 annually, after a 4% increase announced in January 2026. That is encouraging for income investors, particularly given Chevron’s long record as a Dividend Aristocrat.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX)’s recent operating performance also gives the dividend some support. Strong production and earnings give the company room to fund the payout while continuing to invest in the business. If oil and gas prices remain favorable, Chevron should be able to keep raising its dividend while maintaining its broader capital-return strategy.

The dividend yield also makes Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) appealing to income investors. Based on its $7.12 annual payout, CVX currently offers a yield of roughly 3.6%. That is a meaningful income stream and puts Chevron ahead of Exxon on yield at current prices.

The main risk is still the cyclical nature of oil and gas prices. If crude prices stay low for a long time, Chevron could see pressure on earnings and free cash flow. That would make it harder to keep raising the dividend at the pace investors have seen in the past. The latest 4% increase was also fairly modest compared with Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX)’s longer-term record, so investors should keep that in mind when thinking about future increases.

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (NYSE:XOM)

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (NYSE:XOM)’s biggest strength also lies in its dividend record. The company has increased its annual dividend for more than four decades, keeping that streak intact through multiple energy cycles. Its current quarterly dividend is $1.03, or $4.12 annually. The payout is supported by Exxon’s size, diversified operations, and ability to generate cash across different parts of the energy business.

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (NYSE:XOM)’s size is another advantage. Its integrated business gives it exposure to upstream production, refining, and chemicals. That mix can help when conditions are weaker in one part of the energy market. For investors who put a high value on dividend reliability, four decades of increases are difficult to overlook.

The main concern is that dividend growth looks less compelling right now. Exxon kept its $1.03 quarterly dividend unchanged in its latest declaration instead of raising it. That does not necessarily raise concerns about the safety of the payout, but it could make XOM less attractive to investors who are looking for stronger dividend growth in the near term.

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (NYSE:XOM)’s dividend yield is lower than Chevron’s at roughly 2.6% to 2.7% based on its $4.12 annual payout. The yield is still attractive for investors focused on reliable income, but the difference is worth noting for those comparing the two stocks primarily on current income.

Exxon faces the same basic risk as Chevron: a prolonged decline in oil and gas prices. Lower commodity prices could put pressure on free cash flow and make it harder for the company to raise dividends aggressively while also funding capital spending and share buybacks.

Conclusion

Both Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) and ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (NYSE:XOM) remain cornerstone holdings for income-oriented portfolios, but they serve distinct strategic objectives: Chevron currently holds the stronger momentum profile. Its recent 4% payout increase highlights management’s near-term commitment to expanding cash returns to shareholders. Exxon stands out for multi-decade distribution stability and an integrated operational scale designed to weather multi-year commodity troughs, even if its immediate payout growth has paused.

Ultimately, neither company’s dividend is entirely immune to severe oil price corrections. Investors seeking immediate yield and active distribution growth lean toward Chevron, while those prioritizing deep operational diversification and long-term consistency find Exxon better aligned with their portfolio goals.

While we acknowledge the risk and potential of CVX and XOM as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter time frame. When Jeff Bezos said that one breakthrough technology would shape Amazon’s destiny, even Wall Street’s biggest analysts were caught off guard.

Fast forward a year and Amazon’s new CEO Andy Jassy described generative AI as a “once-in-a-lifetime” technology that is already being used across Amazon to reinvent customer experiences.

At the 8th Future Investment Initiative conference, Elon Musk predicted that by 2040 there would be at least 10 billion humanoid robots, with each priced between $20,000 and $25,000.

Do the math. According to Musk, this technology could be worth $250 trillion by 2040.

Put another way, that’s roughly equal to:

  • 175 Teslas
  • 107 Amazons
  • 140 Metas
  • 84 Googles
  • 65 Microsofts
  • And 55 Nvidias

And here’s the wild part — this $250 trillion wave isn’t tied to one company, but to an entire ecosystem of AI innovators set to reshape the global economy.

It’s a leap so massive, it could reshape how businesses, governments, and consumers operate worldwide.

Even if that $250 trillion figure sounds ambitious, major firms like PwC and McKinsey still see AI unlocking multi-trillion-dollar potential.

How could anything be worth that much?

The answer lies in a breakthrough so powerful it’s redefining how humanity works, learns, and creates.

And this breakthrough has already set off a frenzy among hedge funds and Wall Street’s top investors.

What most investors don’t realize is that one under-owned company holds the key to this $250 trillion revolution.

In fact, Verge argues this company’s supercheap AI technology should concern rivals.

Before I reveal the details, let’s talk about how some of the richest people on the planet are positioning themselves.

  • Bill Gates sees artificial intelligence as the “biggest technological advance in my lifetime,” more transformative than the internet or personal computer, capable of improving healthcare, education, and addressing climate change.
  • Larry Ellison — through Oracle, is spending billions on Nvidia chips and partnering with Cohere to embed generative AI across Oracle’s cloud and apps.
  • Warren Buffett — not known for tech hype — says this breakthrough could have a ‘hugely beneficial social impact.

When billionaires from Silicon Valley to Wall Street line up behind the same idea — you know it’s worth paying attention to.

Even as we admire what Tesla, Nvidia, Alphabet, and Microsoft have built, we believe an even greater opportunity lies elsewhere…

But the real story isn’t Nvidia — it’s a much smaller company quietly improving the critical technology that makes this entire revolution possible.

And judging by what I’m hearing from both Silicon Valley insiders and Wall Street veterans…

This prediction might not be bold at all:

My name is Inan Dogan. I’m the co-founder and Research Director of Insider Monkey. I have an important message for you today.

Since March 2017, my stock picks have returned 16.5% annually. Today, I’ve found an opportunity even bigger than my British American Tobacco call.

Two years ago, Wall Street wrote off British American Tobacco (BTI) as a “melting ice cube.” The stock had crashed 40% from its peak, and consensus said the business was dying.

We looked under the cover and realized they were wrong.

We alerted our subscribers, and BTI returned 90% in just 16 months.

Now if you had invested just $10,000 in BTI in June 2024, you’d be sitting on $19,000 in October 2025.

Today, we have identified a nearly identical pattern in a digital-first giant trading at $3.

While the market panics over a surface-level revenue decline, our PhD-led research shows management has actually surgically cut $100 million in waste to focus on high-margin growth.

This pattern is a hallmark of our 16.5% annual return track record. The current opportunity offers a 400% upside potential—dwarfing even our 90% BTI return.
