Can Marathon Petroleum (MPC) Keep Rallying? Wells Fargo Says Yes

Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) has substantially outperformed the broader market, posting gains of almost 132% since the beginning of 2026. While investors worry about a potential valuation correction, Wells Fargo analysts expect the stock to rally further.

On September 1, Wells Fargo raised its price target on MPC from $359 to $300, while reiterating an ‘Overweight’ rating on the shares. The raised target, which implies an upside of over 4% from the current levels, follows the EPA’s decision to grant 1.76 billion renewable fuel-credit exemptions to small refineries for the 2025 compliance year.

This is the largest volume of exemptions from mandates requiring the blending of renewable fuels since 2017 and is much larger than the 990 million in exempt credits previously expected.

EPA Exemptions Give Marathon Petroleum Another Boost:

With its Mandan refinery winning a partial exemption, Marathon was also among the refiners receiving exemptions. The EPA decision adds another positive catalyst for a company that has already benefited strongly from the sharp rise in refining margins. The lower renewable-fuel compliance obligations could help lower costs and improve profitability, while the broader policy environment in Washington also appears increasingly favorable to refiners.

Moreover, the EPA’s exemptions were also considerably larger than previously projected, making the development more significant than a routine regulatory adjustment.

Marathon’s EPA Windfall May Not Last:

The EPA’s decision itself also carries a significant downside for Marathon. The agency has clearly indicated that it is considering reallocating the waived obligations to larger refiners in 2026 and 2027, meaning that the benefit may not be permanent.

In addition, while the aforementioned decision was in favor of refiners, they have also been under pressure by the Trump administration to help lower gasoline prices. If the White House becomes more aggressive in its push towards increased supply or lower prices, some of the benefits from today’s favorable refining environment could be offset.

Lastly, it is important to keep in mind that the unusually high profits recently posted by Marathon were a result of extraordinary market conditions, and the optimism surrounding them may already have been reflected in its share price. Therefore, even a modest decline in refining margins could trigger a significant pullback in valuation.

Conclusion:

Wells Fargo’s bullish stance and higher price target underscore the potential for Marathon Petroleum to continue its rally, with the EPA’s larger-than-expected exemptions providing a fresh catalyst. However, the tailwind may only be temporary, and after a 132% rally, the stock’s elevated valuation and risk of weaker refining margins could limit further upside.
