Buy Citigroup (C) If You’re Worried About a Recession

Diamond Hill Capital recently released its Q1 2020 Investor Letter, a copy of which you can download below. The Diamond Hill Small Cap Fund posted a return of -36.17% for the quarter, underperforming its benchmark, the Russell 2000 Index which returned -30.61% in the same quarter. You should check out Diamond Hill Capital’s top 5 stock picks for investors to buy right now, which could be the biggest winners of the stock market crash. There weren’t a lot of funds who could deliver these kinds of returns without shorting the market or using aggressive put options.

In the said letter, Diamond Hill Capital highlighted a few stocks and Citigroup Inc (NYSE:C) is one of them. Citigroup is an investment bank and a financial services company. Year-to-date, Citigroup Inc (NYSE:C) stock lost 32.3% and on June 3rd it had a closing price of $53.34. Here is what Diamond Hill Capital said:

“Banking and financial services company Citigroup, Inc. underperformed amid concerns over its global footprint and credit card exposure. The company is in a strong capital and liquidity position, while also possessing less overall credit risk as compared to prior periods of stress due in part to exiting the sub-prime lending business a number of years back. We remain confident in Citigroup’s ability to withstand a severe recession and believe the banking industry is positioned to be a positive contributor in helping to stabilize and restart the economy.”

In Q1 2020, the number of bullish hedge fund positions on Citigroup Inc (NYSE:C) stock decreased by about 12% from the previous quarter (see the chart here), so a number of other hedge fund managers don’t seem to agree with Citigroup’s growth potential.
