Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK.B) CEO Warren Buffett the Social Media Leader on Twitter Inc (TWTR) Amongst Fortune 500 CEOs

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.B) CEO and legendary investor Warren Buffett is the leading Fortune 500 CEO on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), in spite of making just five tweets since he joined the social media network last year, and none since February of this year. While underscoring the reverence people have for Buffett on the one hand, it also speaks to the fact that not many prominent CEO’s are making use of social media, as Scarlet Fu detailed on Bloomberg today.

Warren Buffett

“68% of Fortune 500 CEO’s have no social presence on any major social network. That is the same proportion as the previous year, so even though we talk about how the social media networks matter so much in terms of promoting your brand, the same number of people are not engaging with customers,” Fu said.

Buffett’s 875,000 followers dwarf even those of Mark Zuckerberg, who happens to be the CEO of a social media company, one Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB). Zuckerberg’s  use of Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has been limited to just one tweet over the past five years however, made in January 2012, which explains his total of just 313,000 followers. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook meanwhile has 675,000 followers.

Zuckerberg however is the only Fortune 500 CEO with accounts on all five major social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, and Instagram), of which LinkedIn Corp (NYSE:LNKD) is by far the most popular among the CEO’s, owing to its focus on connecting business and industry people together. 25.4% use LinkedIn, while just 1.6% use Google Plus.

Of the five social media networks, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) was the fastest growing among the leading executives, with a 46% increase in the number of CEO’s on the social network. LinkedIn Corp (NYSE:LNKD) actually experienced a mild drop in usage among CEO’s, while Instagram was making its debut on the list.
