Apple Inc. (AAPL): Top Five Hedge Funds With Largest Stakes in the Company

Over the past couple of years, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been one of the most favorite stocks among hedge funds, and almost every big name in the investment world owned shares of this company, or still keeps holding them. Since the latest round of 13F filings has recently ended, it’s time to see, who are the biggest shareholders of the company among over 700 hedge funds tracked by Insider Monkey.

First, we should point out that around 150 hedge funds own long positions in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) as of the end of the second quarter. The largest stake, however, is hold by the notorious activist investor Carl Icahn, who owns 52.76 million shares, following the 7-to-1 stock split from June. Mr. Icahn’s stake has a reported value of $4.9 billion. After trying to pursue the company to return more capital to its stockholders, Mr. Icahn still remains fond of this company, which amasses over 12% of Icahn Capital’s total equity portfolio.

On the second and third spot are D. E. Shaw‘s D E Shaw and Ken Fisher‘s Fisher Asset Management, which also own impressive stakes in Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). Mr. Shaw, boosted his fund’s exposure by 65% during the second quarter and currently holds 11.89 million shares, worth $1.1 billion. The position amasses around 1.5% of D E Shaw’s equity portfolio and represents the largest holding in terms of value. Fisher Asset Management picked up its stake by 5%, reporting ownership of 10.74 million shares, worth $998.5 million.

Philippe Laffont‘s Coatue Management is among the investors that have boosted their stakes in Apple Inc. NASDAQ:AAPL) significantly over the second quarter. Coatue added over 8.5 million shares to its holding, bringing it to 10.1 million shares, worth $938.3 million, which also represents the largest position in its equity portfolio.

Greenlight Capital, led by David Einhorn, while still being among the largest shareholders of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), has trimmed its stake during the second quarter. Greenlight currently owns 9.45 million shares of the company, reducing it by 4.5 million shares over the quarter. Nevertheless, the $878.4 million Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stake is the second largest holding in Greenlight’s equity portfolio.
