Apple Inc. (AAPL) Patent for Better Technology, Safer Driving

Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of discussion about Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and its future involvement in the automotive industry. While many expect Cupertino to become more deeply involved in the years to come, the competition is not looking forward to this. After all, if Apple gets involved in a market you can be rest assured it is playing to win.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was recently granted a patent for a touchscreen based system that offers additional controls while also providing a display that allows the driver to receive feedback without taking their eyes off the road. From a safety standpoint this would be an upgrade.

The patent is entitled: Programmable tactile touch screen displays and man-machine interfaces for improved vehicle instrumentation and telematics

“Disclosed are new methods and apparatus particularly suited for applications in a vehicle, to provide a wide range of information, and the safe input of data to a computer controlling the vehicle subsystems or “Telematic” communication using for example GM’s “ONSTAR” or cellular based data sources. Preferred embodiments utilize new programmable forms of tactile touch screens and displays employing tactile physical selection or adjustment means which utilize direct optical data input. A revolutionary form of dashboard or instrument panel results which is stylistically attractive, lower in cost, customizable by the user, programmable in both the tactile and visual sense, and with the potential of enhancing interior safety and vehicle operation. Non-automotive applications of the invention are also disclosed, for example means for general computer input using touch screens and home automation systems.”

As you can see, this technology would bring a lot to the automotive industry while putting Apple in position to flex its muscles.

We all know that automotive app downloads are becoming all the rage, and within a few years this trend is really going to be moving forward at a fast pace. Apple is setup nicely to compete there, and with this technology the company will be able to become even more involved.
