Apple Gorilla Glass: Apple May Be Calling on Gorilla Glass 3

Apple Gorilla Glass: Even though the Consumer Electronics Show doesn’t start until next week, Corning has decided to talk just a bit about a couple of upcoming product releases. This includes the much anticipated Gorilla Glass 3. While this is news enough, many outlets (see below) are reporting that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) may turn to this more scratch resistant glass in iPhone and iPad devices.

Here is a brief excerpt from Wendell P. Weeks, CEO and president of Corning:

This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in specialty glass and fiber optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers’ favorite devices. These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity.

What is so special about the Gorilla Glass 3? Why would this get Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) so excited?

Here is a quick synopsis from AppleInsider, explaining the finer details of the glass:

As for the next-generation Gorilla Glass 3, Corning claims the material is three times more scratch resistant than the previous version thanks to “Native Damage Resistance” technology. The company also claims that of the scratches that do occur on the glass, 40 percent fewer will be visible to the naked eye.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is always looking to make improvements, and it is safe to say that this would be a huge upgrade over the glass that is currently used in its iPhone and iPad lineups.

Details of Gorilla Glass 3, as well as Corning’s new optical cables, will be revealed for the first time on January 7 at the Consumer Electronics Show.

What are your feelings on this potential upgrade? Do you think Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) devices need a better screen, or are you happy with the products the way they are right now?
