Apple Inc. (AAPL) Asked By Federal Jury To Pay $532.9 million To Texas Based Smartflash LLC Over Patent Infringement Lawsuit

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has faced a lot of legal trials, patent infringement law suits and court proceedings over the years and this tech giant is no strangers to these kinds of law suits. Texas based Smartflash LLC claimed that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) had infringed three of their patents without permission and filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). Smartflash LLC also asked for $852 million in damages. The jury had granted the trial in favor of Smartflash LLC and asked Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to pay $532.9 million to the Texas based company. A ‘Bloomberg’ article discuss about the law suit and the judgment.

Apple Itunes

Smartflash LLC claimed that their ideas were used by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in iTunes software. Smartflash LLC’s invention was related to access management through payment systems and data storage. They claimed that their invention was used by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iTunes in apps like Coin Dozer and 4 Pics 1 Movie.

On the other had Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) had rejected the claims and stated that the patents were worth merely $4.5 million and not $832 million as Smartflash LLC claimed.

“Smartflash makes no products, has no employees, creates no jobs, has no U.S. presence, and is exploiting our patent system to seek royalties for technology Apple invented. We refused to pay off this company for the ideas our employees spent years innovating and unfortunately we have been left with no choice but to take this fight up through the court system,” Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s spokeswoman was quoted as saying.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s lawyers also claimed that there is no point in paying royalties to Smartflash LLC.  The jury took the side of Smartflash and rejected Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s comments that Smartflash’s inventions were not used by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Smartflash’s patents were invalid.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was asked to pay a sum of $532.9 million to Smartflash LLC for using its patent without permission.
