5 Poorest Countries in the World

4. South Sudan

GNI: $1080

Population: 11.4 million

The Republic of South Sudan, a land-locked country in Africa, founded its independent status as a nation in 2011 after decades of civil war. It is home to 11.4 million people. Owing to its political unrest its GNI per capita has not been clearly recorded since 2015 when it was at the $1080. The World Population sheet lists it under data ‘not available.’ Contributing factors to its challenged economy are lack of fiscal accountability in the public sector especially with regard to oil revenues and ongoing political tensions encouraging immigration of a much needed workforce.
