5. The Democratic Republic of Congo

Population: 92.5 million

Congo is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa. With a population of 92.5 million, it is the most populous Francophone country in the world. Its GNI per capita is $1100 ranks it the fifth poorest country due to its intermittent political conflicts and systemic corruption. Although fertility rates remain high, infant and maternal mortality rates also continue their upward trend.

4. South Sudan

GNI: $1080

Population: 11.4 million

The Republic of South Sudan, a land-locked country in Africa, founded its independent status as a nation in 2011 after decades of civil war. It is home to 11.4 million people. Owing to its political unrest its GNI per capita has not been clearly recorded since 2015 when it was at the $1080. The World Population sheet lists it under data ‘not available.’ Contributing factors to its challenged economy are lack of fiscal accountability in the public sector especially with regard to oil revenues and ongoing political tensions encouraging immigration of a much needed workforce.

3. The Central African Republic

GNI: $1040

Population: 4.9 million

With an area slightly smaller than Texas, housing 4.9 million people, CAR is rated as the worst possible country for the young. Its GNI per capita is presently at $1040 owing mostly to excess mortality rates of its working population brought on by AIDS. Additionally, the country has yet to recover from its political coup of 2013.

Population: 16.4 million

With a population of 16.4 million, located on the horn of Africa, Somalia has had to face famine and recurring droughts. With a GNI per capita of $870 the country’s nomadic way of life has contributed to its weak infrastructure.
