5. Minneapolis, MN

With heat impact and drought impact rankings as high as 58 and 48, respectively, the reason Minneapolis made it to this list is because of its readiness to deal with climate change. That, and a 0 in sea-level impact ranking, makes it another climate-safe city in the US.

4. Raleigh, NC

Raleigh has lower heat level and drought level impact rankings than Madison, but it has ended in fourth place instead of first because of its scores in the cold and flood impact rankings. Coupled with this is the fact that despite its readiness to deal with impending climate disasters, the city could still benefit by taking a leaf out of Madison’s book to equip itself better. However, all this is not to say that it’s not well-prepared in case of an emergency.

3. Plano, TX

In somewhat the same boat as Seattle above, Plano is yet another city with rankings arguing that it may be at quite a risk of climate change-related disasters, but with governmental and infrastructural prowess to counter the claim. Like Madison, however, the city is not near an ocean and hence receives no sea-level impact score because of its relative safety from floods. And in the case of other climate disasters, the city is well equipped to deal like the two above.

2. Seattle, WA

Seattle is one of the most well-prepared cities in the country in any climate change-related emergency. Infrastructurally and logistically sound, the city boasts the ability to avert a crisis and think on its feet, although its cold impact and drought impact rankings are a tad high.

1. Madison, WI

Madison ranks as the city best prepared for extreme climate events in the US and tops the 25 most climate-resilient cities in the US. With low cold impact and sea-level impact rankings because of its distance from the ocean, it is a relatively safe city to reside in. Moreover, it has the economic stability to adapt to emergencies and the governmental support for these adaptations. The city’s civic engagement and innovative capabilities allow its residents to adapt just as well to more volatile situations.
