5. State of Eritrea

Percentage of Obese Adult Males: 2.13%

The State of Eritrea is an African coastal nation. It is another poor country on our list, with a GDP per capita of $626 and an economy worth $2.25 billion. Eritrea’s coastal location also lends the country with a rich seafood diet. The country relies on large amounts of worker remittances for its economic output, a much needed facet since nearly all of its exports are either mined products such as gold and copper or agricultural ones such as coffee.

4. Republic of Rwanda

Percentage of Obese Adult Males: 2.01%

The Republic of Rwanda is a landlocked Central African country. Unsurprisingly, it has a GDP per capita of $912 but a relatively larger economy of $12 billion. Rwanda is also one of the more food insecure countries in the world. This is despite the fact that agriculture accounts for nearly one third of its economic output. The country’s food insecurity stems from the fact that most of its farms are quite small in size, with poor irrigation systems making farmers rely on seasonal rainfall for their crops.

3. Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

Percentage of Obese Adult Males: 1.98%

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a landlocked Eastern African country. It is relatively prosperous compared to some other African nations on our list, with a high GDP per capita of $1,475. However, Ethiopia is still quite underdeveloped, with significant proportions of people living on less than $1 per day. Ethiopia also has some of the worst food insecurity in the world, with low agricultural productivity and droughts being some of the causes.

2. Republic of Uganda

Percentage of Obese Adult Males: 1.92%

The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked Eastern African country with a GDP per capita of $1,060. More than 20% of its population lives in poverty, and as of  November 2022, a painful 56% of its population is food insecure. This figure includes 15% of Ugandans being extremely food insecure. Less than half of the country’s population can buy adequate amounts of sugar, cooking oil, and other necessities.

Percentage of Obese Adult Males: 1.67%

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a Southeast Asian coastal country. It has a $449 billion economy and a per capita income of $4,475 in nominal terms. Agriculture plays a dominant role in the Vietnamese economy, with the country also exporting communications equipment and textile products. Vietnamese food is rich in vegetables, fish, and rice. Crucially, it also uses as little oil as possible, removing a big source of fat from the diet.
