5. Afghanistan
Number of Refugee Arrival: 1,619
According to UNHCR, as of 2023, there are approximately 5.7 million Afghan refugees worldwide, with a significant number in Pakistan (3.4 million) and Iran (1.9 million). The country has been embroiled in war and conflict for decades, including the Soviet invasion in 1979, the aftermath of the Soviet withdrawal, the civil war of the 1990s, and the US occupation for two decades. The US has also been welcoming Afghan refugees over the years, with their arrivals varying over time.
4. Sudan
Number of Refugee Arrival: 1,665
Once a host to refugees, with about 1 million refugees, Sudan faced the Darfur crisis in 2003 and ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading its own people to become refugees. According to UNHCR, over time, 3.7 million people have been internally displaced and 800,000 have become refugees. The current conflict scenario has resulted in 800,000 internally displaced persons and 220,000 refugees across countries. The US has also experienced a fair share of refugee arrivals, with the number showing a decline for a time but jumping back up in 2022.
3. Burma
Number of Refugee Arrival: 2,141
The conflict between the Myanmar army and armed ethnic minorities in the country has led to Burmese refugees seeking shelter in other countries. Since 2000, the US has hosted around 188,095 Burmese refugees, with 40,000 residing in Indiana and 30,000 calling Indianapolis their home. The arrival figures for Burmese refugees from 2013 to 2016 were substantial, ranging from above 16,000 in 2013 to more than 12,000 in 2016. Since then, there was a decrease for a while, followed by a jump in 2022 due to the military coup in Burma in 2021.
2. Syria
Number of Refugee Arrival: 4,562
As a result of violent clashes between civilians and the government since 2011, the Syrian refugee crisis has become one of the world’s largest dilemmas, affecting about 70% of the population and prompting the need for humanitarian assistance. According to the UNHCR, more than 14 million people have fled the country for safety, with 7.2 million internally displaced within Syria and 5.5 million refugees found in the neighboring countries of Germany, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. The US has also been experiencing their arrival, with a record-high number showing up in 2016– 12,583. The figures for 2022 also show a rise from the 2021 numbers.

Number of Refugee Arrival: 7,742
The Democratic Republic of Congo gained independence in 1960, but unfortunately, the country has been plagued by conflict ever since. This ongoing crisis has made it the longest humanitarian crisis in Africa and has led to the fourth-largest internally displaced person crisis in the world. According to UNHCR, more than 6.2 million people are internally displaced, and about 1 million have sought asylum in other African countries. In the US, refugee arrivals from the Democratic Republic of Congo have made the country stand out as the one with the most refugees in the US.
