China remains the world’s largest automotive manufacturing country since 2009. Annual vehicle production in the country accounted for more than 32% of the overall vehicles produced around the world, far exceeding that of the European Union or that of the United States and Japan combined.

Fuelling the growth in local automotive manufacturing has been the huge increase in the average income of the Chinese population. There are four major car companies in China namely SAIC Motor, Dongfeng, FAW, and Chang’an, which produce cars mainly for the domestic market. Having a gross output of more than $1.4 trillion in 2021, the automotive industry in China accounts for 10% of the country’s total GDP.
