The 58 year old began his career in IBM in 1990 and stayed with the company throughout, before becoming the senior vice president in 2015. He was the main person overseeing the $34 billion acquisition of Red Hat in 2019. He is the most recent Indian CEO of a major company, having only become the effective CEO in April 2020 and became one of 4 Indian CEOs of a major US tech company.

CEO of the company: Satya Nadella

Satya Nadella is the CEO of one of the biggest companies in the world, and by far one of the most recognizable in Microsoft. If you’re reading this on a laptop, the overwhelming odds suggest that you are reading this on Windows by Microsoft. Satya Nadella was born in Hyderabad in India, and did his bachelors from the country before moving to the US in 1988 to study for an M.S. He then received his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1996. Joining Microsoft in 1992, Nadella was involved in many major projects, especially concerning the cloud business of the company, before becoming the president of the company’s Server and Tools business, before becoming the CEO of the company in 1994. He is the third CEO of the company, and oversaw one of the biggest acquisitions made by the company when it purchased LinkedIn for over $26 billion. From the time he became the CEO to 2018, the stock of the company tripled in value as Microsoft saw a 27% annual growth rate, which is huge for a major already established company.

Topping the list of the 11 biggest companies with Indian CEOs is Google, whose CEO is Sunder Pichai. Undoubtedly, Google is one of the biggest companies in the world with revenues exceeding $162 billion and the fact that the Internet giant has an Indian CEO is a major boost for millions of Indians.

Sunder Pichai was born in Chennai India, where he earned his degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He then moved to the United States where he completed his MS from the extremely prestigious Stanford University as well as an MBA from the even more prestigious Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, before finally joining Google in 2004. After joining Google, Pichai led the innovation efforts for several of Google’s main products including Chrome OS and Google Chrome, in addition to the really popular Google Drive. Later on, he was responsible for overseeing the development of Gmail and Google Maps, two of Google’s most important products. Hence, it wasn’t extremely surprising when Pichae was then made the CEO of Google in 2015, after previously being appointed as the Product Chief by the founder of Google Larry Page. He has held on to the position since and is counted among the most influential people in the world. The funny thing is, Sunder Pichai has stated on occasion that he never even asked for a promotion as the CEO of Google; he was offered the position instead.
