Investors have been pouring money into exchange-traded funds as the stock market in the United States bounces back from the lows of 2020 and posts incredible growth numbers. Two biggest technology companies in the country have already crossed $2 trillion in market capitalization and two others are poised to join them in the coming months. However, as stock volatility remains an area of concern, investors have been turning to ETFs to lower the risk in their portfolios. ETFs are now a $9 trillion global market, according to research firm ETFGI.

In a report, ETFGI has revealed that by June 2021, equity-based ETFs had attracted net flows of over $400 billion, compared to $366 billion in 2020 and $283 billion in 2019 over the same period. Salim Ramji, global head of iShares and index investments at BlackRock, told Financial Times in July that he expected the global ETF market to reach $15 trillion value within four years. According to BlackRock, assets held in the US model portfolio market – increasingly reliant on ETFs – will more than double from $4 trillion over the next five years to $10 trillion.

Some of the top holdings of the largest ETFs by assets under management in the US presently include Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG), among others. There is little doubt that these technology companies, which now comprise over 20% of the S&P 500 Index, have transformed the stock market in recent years, accelerating the adoption of digital solutions.

The entire hedge fund industry is feeling the reverberations of the changing financial landscape. Its reputation has been tarnished in the last decade, during which its hedged returns couldn’t keep up with the unhedged returns of the market indices. On the other hand, Insider Monkey’s research was able to identify in advance a select group of hedge fund holdings that outperformed the S&P 500 ETFs by more than 124 percentage points since March 2017. Between March 2017 and July 2021 our monthly newsletter’s stock picks returned 186.1%, vs. 100.1% for the SPY. Our stock picks outperformed the market by more than 115 percentage points (see the details here). That’s why we believe hedge fund sentiment is an extremely useful indicator that investors should pay attention to.
