Over the last few decades, television (TV) has changed from being a luxury to a standard feature in households. In 2022, the total global revenue attributed to the television industry amounted to $93.76 billion. While TV remains a key feature in our daily lives, rapid technological changes are taking place in the industry as well with multiple new technologies capturing the market, specifically in the digital space. Cable TV is experiencing stagnation, and the subscription-based, video-on-demand model is growing in popularity.

Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) is a model in which users pay a monthly or annual fee in exchange for receiving service streaming access for that time to an online library of movies, TV shows, and other content. Projections on Statista indicate that the number of subscription video-on-demand model subscribers will rise above 1.6 billion in 2027.

It stood at 1.2 billion in 2021. SVOD revenue in the United States is likely to cross $95 billion in 2023, whereas it is estimated to reach around $160 billion worldwide in the same year. This revenue is expected to further grow globally at an annual rate of 9.71%, which is projected to raise the market volume to $230 billion by 2027.

The SVOD industry continues to remain competitive. Major players in the market include Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, YouTube Premium, Hotstar, and HBO to name a few.
