25 Best For-Profit Hospitals in the US

In this article, we will look at the 25 best for-profit hospitals in the US. We will also look at emerging trends in hospitals around the US while exploring the presence and significance of the best healthcare systems and for-profit hospitals in the US. If you want to skip our detailed analysis, head straight to the 5 Best For-Profit Hospitals in the US.

The healthcare industry in the US is a highly lucrative sector, owing to the high demand for healthcare services, a large and aging population, advanced medical technology, and a complex insurance system. This, along with the high prices of medical procedures and medications, contributes to the profitability of the healthcare industry in the US. Apart from the financially rewarding compensation offered to doctors and nurses, jobs in healthcare are among the most respected professions in the world.

The US healthcare sector also encompasses a diverse range of healthcare providers, including for-profit hospitals. Out of the total 6,129 hospitals in the US, 1,235 are investor-owned/for-profit, making them significantly popular. While the majority of hospitals in the country are nonprofit or government-owned, for-profit hospitals still play a significant role in the healthcare system, especially in terms of ownership and management of healthcare facilities.

Which States Have the Most For-Profit Hospitals in the US?

According to research, Nevada leads with 54.3% of its hospitals being for-profit, followed closely by Texas, at 51.8%. For-profit hospitals in Florida took the third spot with 48.1%, while New Mexico follows closely behind at 42.9%.

Interestingly, according to another research conducted by NiceRX Health, New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, is the most profitable hospital in the US. It has 862 staffed beds and $5.73 billion in net patient revenue. Although the hospital is not for profit, it generates significant income.

It is not a surprise that nonprofit hospitals can be profitable sometimes even more than for-profit hospitals. This is because they are entitled to tax-exempt status, which reduces their operating expenses. They can also benefit from tax-free contributions from donors and access tax-free bonds for capital projects, enabling them to allocate more resources towards patient care and investments in healthcare services and infrastructure.

The Mayo Clinic Health System topped our ranking of the Best Hospitals in the US, owing to the exceptional team of world-class specialists with unparalleled care. It is also a nonprofit hospital.

Emerging Trends in Healthcare in 2023

Decision-Making is Evolving

Chief population health officers (CPHO) and chief information officers (CIO) are now playing a larger role in procurement and capital expenditure decisions. MedTech companies are, therefore, expected to offer solutions that streamline tasks, provide integrated caregiver support tools, and deliver actionable insights from patient and workflow data.

Expanding Care Outside Hospitals

Over 180 rural hospitals have closed since 2005, and many hospitals are seeking revenue streams by adopting telehealth services and increasing outpatient procedures at ambulatory centers. “Hospital-at-home” care is becoming more prevalent due to remote patient monitoring and connected care advancements, benefiting both patients and hospitals.

Moreover, a report by the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform has warned that more than 200 rural hospitals in the United States are at immediate risk of closure due to financial difficulties. Over 600 rural hospitals, nearly 30% of such hospitals nationwide, are at risk of closing in the near future. The COVID-19 pandemic provided temporary relief through federal grants, but now that assistance has ended, the financial crisis for rural hospitals is looming larger than ever. Rising healthcare costs, workforce shortages, and low patient volumes have contributed fairly to their struggles.

Increasing Focus on Cyber Security

The rise in cyber security attacks on electronic health records (EHRs) and medical devices has necessitated an increased investment in IT infrastructure. Hospitals are expected to establish network and cloud security measures, protect devices from malicious activity, and develop training programs and incident response plans. MedTech companies, therefore, need to incorporate security capabilities into their innovations and contribute to a shared system for cataloging vulnerabilities.

Expanding Virtualization and Machine Learning

AI and augmented reality technologies are being considered for immersive and engaging experiences. Augmented reality can facilitate troubleshooting and support for devices, reducing downtime and costs. It also enables virtual product and procedure trainings, making medical training more accessible without travel.

The FDA issued guidance on Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in medical devices in December 2022. As these technologies become more common, augmented reality is gaining recognition as a cost-effective and time-efficient initial approach.

With further ado, let’s move on to the list of the most profitable hospitals in America.

Methodology

In order to determine the rankings of the best for-profit hospitals in America, a comprehensive methodology was employed. We picked the profitability of the hospitals as a core quality to define ‘best’. The idea is that a financially successful hospital indicates efficient management, excellent patient care, and a sustainable healthcare system. By prioritizing profitability, these hospitals can consistently invest in state-of-the-art technology, attract top talent, and ultimately deliver incredible healthcare services to their patients.

Hence, the first step involved considering the income-revenue ratio of the company that owns each hospital. Given that most companies possess multiple hospitals, the focus was placed on identifying the hospital companies with the highest revenues.

Subsequently, the identified hospitals of companies were subjected to further evaluation based on their net patient revenue. This additional criterion allowed for fine-tuning of the rankings, ensuring the list’s accuracy and robustness.

For accurate and up-to-date data on the annual revenue and net incomes of parent companies, we referred to the official websites of the respective companies. For data on the net patient revenue of the hospitals, we relied on the databases from American Hospital Directory and Definitive Healthcare.
