“Throughout the summer, consumers struggle with how to best protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun. But which products are the safest? A new report released Tuesday by the Environmental Working Group claims that 73% of the 880 sunscreens it tested don’t work as well as advertised or contain “worrisome” ingredients. The authors of the annual report say they hope to help consumers make smarter choices when choosing the right products — because not all sunscreens are made equal.”

“Medicine has become synonymous with drug therapy, a situation that is upsetting for patients and health care practitioners alike, and potentially dangerous. This is especially true for elderly patients, many of whom are taking multiple agents from different practitioners who tend not to discontinue medications prescribed by their peers. This can lead to an ever-increasing number of pills taken, a circumstance called polypharmacy (being on five or more medications at one time), where there is a high risk for adverse reactions and drug interactions.”

“Young people with asthma also have evidence of telomere shortening, according to the preliminary research by John R. Balmes, MD, of University of California, Berkeley, and colleagues. They write, “Our results suggest that telomere length may have potential for use as a biomarker of DNA damage due to environmental exposures and/or chronic inflammation.” The study included 14 children and adolescents living in Fresno, Calif. — the second-most polluted city in the United States. The researchers assessed the relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a “ubiquitous” air pollutant caused by motor vehicle exhaust; and shortening of telomeres, a type of DNA damage typically associated with aging.”

“The last thing you want is for your phone to run out of juice when you need it most. Usually, a phone lasts a full work day with moderate use. But if you use it heavily, you’ll need to recharge it more often. Batteries also lose steam over time, running down faster the longer you’ve owned the phone. The possibility of losing battery — and therefore losing your communication hub — is frightening and real. If you feel your handset battery seems to be stuck in the ’90s and doesn’t last as long as you’d like, you’re not alone. So if a long-life battery tops your list of smartphone needs, check out these top-scorers — they lasted impressively long during our lab tests for continuous video playback on Airplane mode.”

“Amazon this morning staked another claim in the billion-dollar wedding industry with the launch of a new Wedding Shop dedicated to sales of handcrafted items, including décor, invitations, gifts, jewelry, accessories and more. The shop is an offshoot from the retailer’s less than two-year old Etsy competitor, Handmade at Amazon, which aims to offer the same sort of original, artisan-designed products people have come to expect from the rival crafts marketplace.”

“Something terrible happened to me four years ago. My local arcade closed down. For years, I was a dedicated Tekken player. I’d spend countless hours each week in the arcade trying to master the craft of virtual close-quarter combat. I never got close, but I have fond memories of learning the intricacies of a deep game and meeting plenty of friends doing it. When my main arcade shut down, I fell off the bandwagon. I was an embarrassment to the scene. But others kept on, and Sydney still has a small but dedicated community of fighting game fans, as do many cities in the US. Nowadays, there are two fighting games you’ll find in an arcade: Tekken and Street Fighter.”

“What are the countries that have the most legal and illegal immigrants? Unfortunately, we live in the world where many people don’t live in their place of birth, and the reasons for that are numerous. Sometimes people simply migrate because of their job, studies, and better opportunities in general, but on the other side, sometimes people are forcefully driven away from their homes, due to devastating occasions, such as wars, threats or any other political issues. On the contrary to those who are in the position to choose a country to migrate to, making the choice according to their needs, these migrants are not in the position to be choosy, but they simply go wherever the road takes them, together with the people of similar destiny.”

“One of the big changes on the iPhone 8 that every rumor agrees on is the display. Apple will finally be making the jump from LCD to sharper and more battery-efficient OLED panels for its new flagship iPhone later this year, which makes total sense. But rumors also suggest that the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, expected to be incremental upgrades unveiled in September, will stick with LCD. Since the iPhone 8 will likely cost upwards of $1,000, that means most iPhone users will still be stuck on LCD screens in 2017.”
