Sweden is the most gay friendly country in Europe, and has some of the most progressive rights for the LGBT community in the world, with same sex sexual activity having been legalized since 1994. Even back in 1972, the age of consent for same sex sexual activity was made the same as for a heterosexual person, and even became the first country in the world to allow transgender people to officially change their gender post gender reassignment surgery in addition to declassifying transvestism as an illness in the same year. In 2013, changing genders was allowed even if there wasn’t any gender reassignment surgery or hormone replacement therapy.

In 2009, Sweden legalized same sex marriages, even though same-sex couples could apply for partner benefits for the last 25 years, since the relevant legislation was passed back in 1995. Since 1987, it has been illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation while lesbian couples have had access to artificial insemination and IVF since 2005. Same-sex couples have also been able to adopt children since 2003, six years before same-sex marriage was legalized.
