Another big challenge for Kraft is how far it will go to defend its brand value. Earlier this month, Kraft sued Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. (NASDAQ:CBRL) over a separate deal the restaurant company made with John Morrell Food Group, a Kraft competitor. Currently, Kraft has the rights to sell products with the Cracker Barrel brand. Kraft claims the deal with John Morrell could damage Kraft’s Cracker Barrel brand reputation.

Foolish bottom line
Kraft’s value remains in its dominant brand portfolio. But the company faces an uphill battle as it fights for market share and defends its brands in an ever-increasingly highly commoditized food and beverage industry. Management appears focused on the right metrics for increasing the odds of Kraft’s success. Time will tell if these efforts translate into top-line growth.
