The top universities in the world in 2013 span the globe. Going away to college is an important event in the lives of many. But how can you be certain that the school you have selected is the best choice for furthering your education? We would like to present you with a list we have compiled of the top 10 universities in the world in the year 2013.

The schools in our  top universities in the world in 2013 were ranked according to the statistics issued by the tenth World University Rankings, published by Times Higher Education, a British magazine in charge with evaluating the higher education market. For the third year in a row, the California Institute of Technology, a school with just 2,200 students, ranks as number one in the world. Its faculty staff consists of only 300 professors and approximately 600 researchers, but combined, they have won a total of 31 Nobel Prizes, more than any other faculty in the world. The number one spot was previously held by Harvard University, which ranked 2 in 2013.

The methodology used for ranking the schools did not focus on entry requirements, post-graduation salaries, or graduation rates. Instead, Times Higher Education focused on the international reputation of the schools and on global scholarships. Research and innovation, productivity, and research excellence were the main indicators taken into account.

In terms of higher education, US schools have fared extremely well this year. Out of the top ten schools in the world, seven are located in the United States. The other 3 are from the United Kingdom. What is more, out of the top 200 schools selected by Times Higher Education, 77 are US-based. Even though most US schools have dropped in rankings as of 2012 and have not yet regained their spot, the US dominance is still evident.

We’ve also included the rankings the schools received in 2012 so that you can compare how their performance has improved or not, during the past year.

Curious to see if your school has made it on the list? Let’s take a look at the countdown of the top universities in the world in 2013.
