Of course, one book alone certainly can’t teach you everything you need to know about investing, but The Intelligent Investor is a great start. Believe me, though the first edition was published in 1949, its concepts still hold true in today’s markets to a startling extent. In fact, I was so intrigued the first time I opened the cover that I read all its nearly 600 pages in four short days. Then, I took another month to peruse it again more slowly.

Why? There are many reasons Buffett says the book changed his life for the better, but the biggest overriding theme for me involved Graham’s discussions on keeping my emotions in check while taking advantage of market fluctuations.

There’s a lot more to it, but if you can start by absorbing that advice, it’ll go a long way toward helping you realize the stock market isn’t so scary after all.
