Apple iPad Competitor: Sony is the Next Competitor to Take On the Apple iPad

Apple iPad Competitor: Last week, we published a story regarding the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad squaring off against the Nexus 7 in Japan. Many were surprised to find that the iPad is actually losing ground to its competition in this country.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) to be Added to Several WisdomTree ETFsIn addition to the Nexus 7, it appears that the tablet from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is going to have even more competition in Japan in the near future.

Bloomberg is reporting that Sony will be throwing its hat into the tablet ring with its new Xperia Tablet Z. Here is some more information to get us started:

“Sony Corp. (6758), the electronics maker struggling after four straight annual losses, will introduce a new tablet computer in Japan this year as it tries to lure customers from Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Samsung Electronics Co.”

This may not have anything to do with the United States market right now, but it is an interesting addition to the industry nonetheless. Is it possible that Sony is targeting the Japanese market due to the recent success of the Nexus 7? Do they see a vulnerability in the market that could be exploited in the near future?

At this point, it is easy to see that Sony is desperate for something that can bring the company back to life. The question remains: is taking on the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad the best way of doing this? Or is the company facing a losing proposition from the start?

Here is more from the Bloomberg Article:

“Sony Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai is focusing on mobile devices to revive the company, whose TV unit has been unprofitable for eight straight fiscal years. The Tokyo-based company debuted its first tablet in 2011, making it the last of the world’s top 10 laptop makers to tap surging demand triggered by Apple’s iPad.”

Although Sony has been in the tablet market since 2011, the former electronic giant has not made much noise. They are hoping to change things around with the new Xperia Tablet Z. Here is more on the tablet that hopes to crush the iPad:

“The Xperia Tablet Z will be 6.9 millimeters (.27 inches) thick, weigh 495 grams (17 ounces) and have a 10.1-inch (26- centimeter) display, Sony said in a statement today. The waterproof device may debut in Japan as soon as March before appearing elsewhere, Noriko Shoji, a Tokyo-based spokeswoman, said by phone. The price hasn’t been decided, she said.”

What are your thoughts on the competition from Sony in the tablet market? Is Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in trouble?
