BlackBerry’s New Lawyer Is Getting Busy (Bloomberg)
Steve Zipperstein prosecuted failed savings-and-loan associations in the 1980s and investigated the government’s siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, in the ’90s. Now the battle-hardened lawyer has joined Canadian smartphone maker Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) to fight its critics. Zipperstein, who turns 54 this month, was lured out of retirement in Santa Barbara, California, last spring year by an offer to become BlackBerry’s chief legal officer. He joined the Waterloo, Ontario-based company in July to handle everything from patent disputes to privacy issues, and says his time as a Justice Department lawyer and federal prosecutor in Los Angeles will serve him well in defending Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s interests.

BlackBerry Messenger, a free messaging and social networking application for BlackBerry devices, will be coming to iOS and Android app stores at some point, but not June 27 as tweeted by T-Mobile UK early Thursday. T-Mobile did send out a new tweet later today, saying: “Sorry folks, we got over-excited about the BBM app coming to Android/iOS. No specific availability date yet, stay tuned for details.” A Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) spokeswoman issued a email statement in between the T-Mobile tweets disavowing the initial T-Mobile report. “We will communicate an update as soon as we have an availability date to share,” the spokeswoman said. She noted that when BBM for Android and iOS were announced on May 14, the company said it would be available this summer, subject to approval by the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) App Store and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play.
