CEO Thorsten Heins: Research In Motion BlackBerry CEO Says This Ultra-Popular Device Is Dying

CEO Thorsten Heins: While many companies are betting on the fact that the tablet market will continue to grow in the near future, there are others, such as Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY), that have a different idea as to what is going to happen next.

Believe it or not, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins feels that large screens will call for the end of tablets within five years.

This is definitely a bold claim, being that the table market is booming with many company’s throwing its resources into these devices with the decline in traditional computer sales.

Research In Motion Ltd (BBRY)While Heins has a right to his own opinion, many wonder if he feels this way because Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has yet to make a dent in the tablet market. And not because of a lack of effort.

BlackBerry did its best to push its PlayBook tablet, but there were not too many people interested in what it had to offer.

With this suggestion by the top dog at Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY), one has to wonder if this means that the company will scrap any ideas of diving into the tablet market in the near future.

According to a recent piece in the Telegraph, Heins has been quite vocal about where he sees things headed in the near future:

“In five years, I see BlackBerry to be the absolute leader in mobile computing – that’s what we’re aiming for. I want to gain as much market share as I can, but not by being a copycat.”

As you can see, Heins is not lacking any confidence when it comes to what he expects from Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) over the next few years.

In an interview yesterday with Bloomberg, he also talked in great detail about the early success of the company’s  Q10 device:

“We have very, very good first signs already after the launch in the UK. This is going into the installed base of more than 70 million BlackBerry users, so we have quite some expectations. We expect several tens of million of units.”

While this is all well and good, the real question is this: will the Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry Q10 be able to sustain the momentum when the device becomes available in North America?

Saying that the table market is going to be phased out sooner rather than later is a big claim, and one that most people are not going to take seriously.

Maybe Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) CEO Thorsten Heins is onto something. Or maybe he is hyped up on big sales numbers of the company’s latest release, the Q10.

In the months to come, there are two things to keep an eye on:

1. How the BlackBerry Q10 sells in North America

2. If there are any grumblings of the company getting involved once again in the tablet arena

What are your thoughts on these two details?
