Larger Screen iPhone: Is Apple Planning a Low Cost, Larger Display iPhone?

Larger Screen iPhone: Rumors, rumors everywhere. When it comes to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) there is no escaping the rumor mill. While some rumors eventually come to fruition, others go by the wayside and are never discussed again.

This time around, it is time to take a closer look at the rumor that Apple will release a low cost iPhone with a larger display in emerging markets including China.

Who is the source of this rumor? The first outlet to bring the information to the forefront was DigiTimes. Here is what they had to say:

“Apple will roll out a low-cost version of the iPhone for China and other emerging markets in the second half of 2013, according to supply-chain sources.”

“Some sources claimed that they have seen the sample of the low-cost iPhone, which will come with a larger display, meeting the prevailing trend for the adoption of 5-inch displays for high-end models. They added that the low-priced iPhone will also have a brand new exterior design.”

The article goes on to explain that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s success in China with the iPad mini – and its lower entry price – could be fueling this discussion.

While it is easy for people to get excited about this rumor, it is important to note that it is not the first time it has been discussed. In fact, it appears that rumors of a low cost iPhone come about every few months. As of now, however, this has yet to happen. Additionally, Apple has not led on that this is in the cards.

There is no denying that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) likely has its eyes on the Chinese market, being that this is a huge opportunity for growth. And yes, consumers in this country prefer less expensive technology. But does this guarantee that a cheaper iPhone will make its way to China in 2013? Definitely not.

The same DigiTimes article added the following information, touching on one of the options for bringing down the price.

“Qualcomm’s recent launch of its latest family of Snapdragon chipsets, including the dual-core MSM8960 and the quad-core APQ8064, for the entry-level to mid-range smartphones may pave the way for Apple bringing out the low-cost iPhone, added the sources.”

What are your thoughts on this Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) rumor? Does it have legs or is it unwarranted like many rumors before it?
