Facebook Inc (FB) Is Still Not Cool Enough For President Yahya Jammeh

While some political leaders are using Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) to break news (President Obama being one such case), others including Gambian President Yahya Jammeh have expressed aversion towards the social media platform. However, Bloomberg News, Al Jazeera and British Broadcasting Corp. were clueless as to the preferences of the President of Africa’s smallest country as they quoted statements from his fake Facebook page, according to an article on The Wall Street Journal.

Facebook, is FB a good stock to buy, economic impact, Landon Dowdy, Roger Noll

The statement was in relation to the defeat of rebel forces, who were fighting to topple the autocratic leader. The parody Facebook Inc  (NASDAQ:FB) page was in fact run by two Canadians in their 30s who never had any intention to disguise their page as an authentic one, according to the article. However, due to dearth of news available through the usual channels, as is customary for African countries, the Western media let the desperation take the better of their investigative skills and quoted the statement from the parody page.

After the whole drama, when Jammeh revealed that the much quoted Facebook Inc  (NASDAQ:FB) page is not his, he also stated that he in fact doesn’t even’ browse the internet’. A cursory look at his credentials gives an idea why he would think that he is too cool for the most popular social media platform.

The article quoted the president’s official government website when listing a wide variety of ailments that Mr. Jammeh can cure. On the top of the list rests HIV/AIDS, followed by diabetes, asthma, stroke , sickle-cell anemia, infertility and impotence. The miraculous medication is prepared from fruits, leaves, branches and roots of trees. If this was to see the light of Facebook Inc  (NASDAQ:FB), Jammeh would be swarmed by desperate people seeking cure for some of these supposedly incurable diseases. The president cannot let this happen because he needs some time for his hobbies, which according to the website include driving and riding motorcycles and hunting in the forests.

The icing on the cake is the hobby entry ‘browsing the internet’. However, it does little to accentuate the incredulity of the profile that curing HIV/AIDS had already introduced into the mix.
